Habit Tracker: a generic name behind 145,000 ratings

An app called simply Habit Tracker sits near the top of the category with 145,000 ratings. We look at what it does and what the plain name hides.

There are at least a dozen apps called some version of "Habit Tracker" in the App Store. This one — from Inner Grow Limited — is the one with 145,000 ratings, and telling it apart from the others is genuinely difficult.

What it gives you

The basics done cleanly. Add a habit, set a schedule, get a reminder, see a calendar. Nothing is hidden behind a concept you have to learn first.

Flexible scheduling: specific weekdays, several times a day, targets per week rather than per day. More configurable than Streaks and less demanding than Habitica.

A large body of ratings at 4.8, which for a category full of two-week-old apps is some assurance of durability.

What it costs

Ambiguity. The name is a search term, not a brand. Anyone recommending it has to name the developer as well, and installing the wrong one is easy — a problem the app itself created.

iOS only. We could not confirm a Google Play package from the developer's site.

A subscription for unlimited habits, widgets and detailed statistics.

Who it is not for

Anyone who cares about knowing what they installed. If a distinctive name and a visible developer matter to you — and after a while they do — Streaks, Habitify and Way of Life are easier to hold on to.
